Self-Scan Shopping Carts

Let me just preface this by saying that I never said that the ideas I list out here would be good. That’s the only time I’m going to say that. You know the self check out lanes at certain grocery stores and wal-marts where you are trusted to scan the item and then put it into the bag? Even with all of the precautions they take, like having one cashier oversee 4 of these lanes, and having the bag calculate the weight of the items so that it knows if you put something extra in there (at least that’s how I think it works), I’m still surprised that this process exists. I would guess that most people have been at least tempted to steal something when self checking out. I should also mention that half of the time the self check out lanes totally suck because the screen refuses to believe that you’ve put your item in the bag and then requires a cashier to come and unlock it.

Anyways, what if we could make this sucky process faster? I’m thinking about a shopping cart that has the scanner built into it so as you shop you scan and place items into your cart. There would have to be similar weight sensing technology to stop potential theft, but think how nice it would be if you didn’t have to go through your cart after you’ve just finished filling it? What I imagine happening is when you’re ready to pay you remove a remote like gadget that’s attached by a spiral cord to the shopping cart and scan it at a self check out station. You pay and you go. There’s many details to be worked out, such as what color the spiral cord would be and whether the remote like gadget would also have a docking station for you ipod, but think about it man!!!
