Simon Delivers meets Netflix

Rebekah and I subscribe to Netflix and it’s great. I’ve always hated going to the movie rental store because unless you walk in with a specific movie in mind, you end up spending close to an hour trying to find one suitable for renting. Usually the one you end up with is a compromise and it’s one of those things where it’s the only one everyone could agree on so noone ends up being happy. Well Netflix changed all that, because first and foremost, I don’t have to physically go anywhere to rent a crappy movie. And it probably won’t be a crappy movie because I’m not going to rent something unless the description sounds good and it’s gotten at least some decent ratings.

Anyways, a while back, Rebekah mentioned her interest in using Simon Delivers to order groceries. Our main reluctance was that the delivery times didn’t match up with our schedule, and we definitely didn’t want our groceries sitting out in front of our house all day. I must have seen a billboard recently, because it’s been on my mind again, and the more I think about it, it’s a damn good idea. I hate going to the grocery store almost as much as I hated going to the movie rental place. And at the grocery store you have to try to fit a bunch of different shaped items into paper or plastic bags and then haul them into your house and put them into their appropriate spots.

You can see why the more I thought about it, the more Simon Delivers seemed like a good idea. I went onto their site the other day, and pretty much the only thing that kept me from ordering was their crappy shopping cart tool, that didn’t allow me to save any items (and see the total price) without creating account. If not for that, I probably would have placed an order. But as I was picking items, I thought to myself that it would be much more helpful if I could see other users’ comments on the items I was about to buy. That’s probably the best thing about shopping on the internet, something that Netflix has totally capitalized on. So now that you’ve read through this whole long-winded post, I ask that you just think about how sweet Simons Delivers could be if it were a little more like Netflix.

Oh and think about how cool it would be to allow individuals to create groupings of grocery items based on a recipe. So basically I could login, pick all of the necessary items to make pear honey (see post from several days ago) and then others could search and find this recipe and with one click add all of the ingredients to their shopping cart. SWEET!

  6. oh Utah, glad to see you could make it. Are you talking about goldbond? If so, do what I do, just take a two liter of coke, rip off the label, then drape it over the goldbond and then insist to the cashier that it is coke.
